“The Lord’s Return” (Part 1)

This week we come to the first of two parts about the return of Christ, written for us by Derrick Tickner from Shepshed.

“The Lord’s Return” (Part 1)

Reading: 2 Corinthians 2 v. 14-16

Some weeks ago I mentioned the expectant heart of an elderly clergyman who, first thing every morning, went down to his study, drew open the curtains, and said to himself, ‘Perhaps today!’ What a lovely expression of faith and trust in the Lord’s promise to return.

We know Jesus will return because He promised it! When reassuring His disciples, Jesus said: ‘My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.’ (John 14 v.2-3). Not only do we have this expectation, but so do the angels (Matthew 16 v.27).

In addition, we also have the Holy Spirit’s inspiration in the heart of the Apostle Paul who draws a great word picture in his letter to the Church at Corinth. (2 Cor. 2 v.14-16).

Paul is picturing something that he had undoubtedly witnessed, or at least had heard about, during his time in Rome. As you read the focus verses, try to catch the atmosphere. The victorious general is returning from yet another triumphant battle. The streets are lined with excited people, each holding their burning spices to send a triumphant aroma into the air. His troops follow him proudly; the procession includes all the ‘booty’ he has seized in his battles and lastly, the defeated prisoners of war, their hearts full of fear for their future. What were their lives worth, and what fate awaited them?

And there is more! What further reward was there for the returning, victorious hero? Actually, something quite remarkable happens. Quite apart from his share of the captured treasure, he actually gets to sit in the place of highest honour – on Caesar’s throne! (I suspect for not too long.)

We too are called to live victorious lives because we share in Christ’s triumph. Let us keep our eyes on HIM – and HIM alone.

You can listen to ‘The Solid Rock’ (‘My Hope is Built on Nothing Less’) recorded last year, and sung by a virtual choir:
